General info

When to Visit
Seasonal highlights of the park.
Kruger National Park is open year-round, but the ideal time to visit depends on your interests. The dry winter months (May to September) are best for game viewing, as animals are easier to spot around waterholes and the bush is less dense. For birdwatching and lush landscapes, the wet summer months (October to April) are perfect, with migratory birds and newborn animals adding to the experience. Each season offers a unique perspective of the park’s natural beauty.
Temperature & Climate
What to expect weather-wise.
Kruger National Park has a subtropical climate, with hot, rainy summers and mild, dry winters. Summer temperatures (October to April) can reach highs of 32–40°C (90–104°F), with afternoon thunderstorms being common. Winter (May to September) is cooler and more comfortable, with daytime temperatures around 24–28°C (75–82°F) and chilly early mornings and nights. Pack accordingly for the season—layers are key, especially on early morning game drives.
History of Kruger National Park
From protected reserve to world-famous safari destination.
Kruger National Park was officially established in 1926, but its conservation roots go back to 1898 when President Paul Kruger declared it a protected area to preserve wildlife. Over the decades, the park has grown in size and significance, becoming one of Africa’s most respected wildlife sanctuaries. Today, it stands as a symbol of South Africa’s commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism, welcoming visitors from around the globe to experience its wild heritage.
