MalaMala Camp is an unfenced oasis in the middle of the bush. Camp Shonga

4 Day Camp Shawu Safari

It is an adventure camp in a private concession of the Kruger National Park and offers guests a range of activities and elegant accommodation on the edge of the Mpanamana Dam. The camp is named after a famous elephant, ‘Shawu’, who had the longest tusks ever recorded in South Africa and roamed this valley for sixty years.

The suites are built out of authentic Buffalo dung walls and have decks overlooking the dam where many animals come down to drink during the day. Guests can experience excellent game viewing from the decks of the camp and can go on game viewing drives with expert guides.

Overview

This option lets guests choose the number of days they would like to spend on safari but split between the Kruger National Park and a private lodge in the Greater Kruger. This allows guests a good mix of accommodation types and landscapes to explore while on safari.

An experienced game ranger will show guests the African bush as it has never been seen before as they enjoy a mix of safari game drives, bush walks, relaxation time and fantastic cuisine. Guests will stay in en-suite African chalets in the Kruger National Park and in luxury en-suite rooms in the private reserves.

Safaris depart 7 days a week, pending availability.

Our Budget and Classic Kruger Safaris depart with a minimum of one person with no single supplement for single travelers. Our Combo safaris require a minimum of two persons to depart.

Guests make use of facilities and accommodation situated inside the Kruger National Park, unless forced to stay elsewhere because of availability.

Safaris with accommodation in multiple rest camps are available on request.

This is not a private safari and more-than-likely there will be other guests joining you on the game drives and transfer vehicles.

Children are welcome, subject to availability.
Children under 6 years of age are not allowed on SAN Parks open game drive vehicles.
Children under 12 years of age are not allowed on SANParks bush walks.
Private game drives for families can be arranged at an extra charge.

Guests flying out of OR Tambo Airport are urged NOT to book flights earlier than 19:00 (domestic flights) or 20:00 (international flights), in order to have sufficient time to get to the airport. Or even better – spend the night in Johannesburg if possible.

You will be held responsible for any missed flight, or flights not booked at a suitable time.
Private transfers for guests with early flights can be arranged in advance at an extra charge.

Itinerary

Transit Day 1: Johannesburg to Kruger

The group will depart from Johannesburg 08:30 from either Outlook Lodge O.R. Tambo or the airport itself, and other collection points are offered at an extra charge. From here, guests travel through the Highveld and then down the escarpment through the scenic Lowveld. Guests will stop for lunch (own expense) and reach Berg-en-dal Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park in the afternoon.

After settling into your accommodation, you will head out on your first game drive! All game drives are conducted in specially adapted 4×4 open game-drive vehicles to allow you the best possible vantage point. On return, you have some time to visit the Park’s shop, go for a walk and explore your surroundings.

Dinner is a three-course meal served al fresco at the private camp within Berg-en-dal. Along with dinner, a selection of wine will be served, but guests are allowed to bring along alternative or additional drinks.

0-2 Days: Full day in the Park

It’s an early wake up today to see the best that the dawn has to offer. For predators, this is their most active time of the day and a great opportunity to spot many of the park’s Big Five.

After the morning drive guests will return to Berg-en-dal for breakfast/brunch at the camp. After breakfast, you will have time to relax and enjoy some of the other activities including swimming or visiting the park shop which offers curios, drinks and snacks. Guests may just want to catch up on some sleep, read a book or do some bird watching.

After this relaxed time, guests will set off on an afternoon game drive in a specially adapted 4×4 open game drive vehicles. The vehicle affords one the best vantage-point as well as the best opportunity of spotting game.

After that, guests will return to camp to enjoy a delicious dinner and tales told under the stars and relaxation around a camp fire.

Transit Day 2: Kruger Park to Private Game Reserve

Another early wake up today to see the best that the dawn has to offer. You will grab a quick cup of coffee or tea (rusks included) before heading off on your 3-4-hour safari. Guests usually enjoy fantastic sightings in the mornings, and always with the help of a knowledgeable guide.

After breakfast at the camp, guests will head towards one the world-renowned private game reserves adjacent to the Kruger National Park in a closed, air-conditioned tour vehicle.

After lunch at the new destination, guests will set off on an afternoon game drive in a specially adapted 4×4 open game drive vehicles. The vehicle affords one the best vantage-point as well as the best opportunity of spotting game. Sightings of predators in private reserves are known to be good and although this cannot be guaranteed, the chances of close-up encounters are increased. Animals and birds in the park have also become accustomed to having game drive vehicles around without feeling threatened which makes for a fantastic game viewing experience.

Dinner will be served under the stars as guest converse around the fire and discuss the day’s adventures.

0-2 Days: Full Day in Private Game Reserve

Two game drives are on offer per day in private game reserve lodges, where an experienced game ranger and expert local Shangaan tracker will share their wealth of knowledge and love for the African bush with guests.

Guests are invited to join the morning walk after breakfast, while the rest of the day is spent at leisure and relaxing. Lunch will be served around 14:00, and dinner once again served under the stars (weather permitting) along with some fantastic, local wines.

Transit Day 3: Private Game Reserve to Johannesburg

Today guests will have one last chance to explore and try find what might have been missed in the park. An early morning game drive will see guests out in the park one final time before returning to a scrumptious breakfast. Thereafter guests will return to Johannesburg, a drive which takes at least six hours, so it is advisable to sleep over in Johannesburg on this night.

OPTIONAL EXCURSION: The Panorama Route

All guests booked on a safari of three-days-or-more have the opportunity to visit one of the most breathtakingly-beautiful routes in the country – the Panama Route.

This full-day, optional excursion takes you to a handful of historical and picturesque attractions along the way. You’ll get to see renowned attractions like Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Graskop Gorgeand, and God’s Window.

A stop in one of the small towns en-route is included for breakfast as well as lunch at a private lodge.
